The New York Times - Roberta Gibb broke barriers in the Boston Marathon. Now there’s a statue of her feat.

“In 1966, Roberta Gibb became the first woman to complete the Boston Marathon at a time when women were prohibited from doing so because they were considered “physiologically incapable.”

Now, more than 55 years later, Gibb has broken another gender barrier by becoming the race’s first woman to be featured as a sculpture and placed along the Boston Marathon route.

Last week, “The Girl Who Ran” was unveiled by the 26.2 Foundation, a nonprofit that promotes marathoning, and installed in downtown Hopkinton, Mass., where the race begins.” Continue Reading

“HOPKINTON — After all the champions spoke before her, Mary Jo LaFreniere came up with the winning words. 

“Welcome to Hopkinton!” the Select Board member exclaimed. 

A greeting that was not forthcoming more than half a century ago. 

Roberta "Bobbi" Gibb did not need to hide in the bushes on this night. The spotlight kept her in plain sight. 

Gibb is not only the first woman to run the Boston Marathon, she is the race’s first female to have a sculpture created in her honor, adding to the town’s iconic figures captured in bronze.

The statue, unveiled Tuesday night in a ceremony attended by a crowd of about 100 people at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts, was created by its inspiration: Gibb.” Continue Reading.

Events featured Marathoner Bobbi Gibb's Artwork Contributions

It only seems fitting that someone who has as many varied interests as Bobbi Gibb does would be front and center at a handful of different events across Cape Ann over the next two weeks. The Renaissance woman's current focus is the Bobbi Gibb Marathon Sculpture Project, created with the goal of erecting a sculpture of Gibb, a Rockport resident, on the Boston Marathon course.

Gibb -- who gained fame as the first woman to run in the Boston Marathon during a time when women weren’t allowed to participate in the sport -- is also an accomplished artist and author, has a law degree and does research on ALS as a neuroscience affiliate at MIT and the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.   Read more here!
